St. Ignatius Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits):

Jesuit life centers on the imitation of Jesus, focusing on those priorities which constitute Christ's mind, heart, values, priorities and loves. What are those values, priorities and loves? Ignatius would encourage us to consider what Jesus said and did. At the foundation of Jesus' life was prayer, a continuous search for how best to live as an authentic human being before a loving God. Jesuits stress the need to take time to reflect and to pray, in order to find out how God wants us to serve in all our ministries. It views the world as a place where Christ walked, talked and embraced people. It views the world, therefore, as a place of grace, a place of being able to give life to others.

The Jesuit Centre of Spirituality is a non-residential centre founded by the Jesuit Community of Halifax in 2006. The mission of the Centre is to make spiritual direction, daily prayer with scripture, and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius available to all people of God in Atlantic Canada. It provides training and continuing education for spiritual directors and supports the growth of faith communities. We extend a warm welcome to all people of faith. Our aim is to provide a safe space for people searching for what is important in their life. We offer non-judgmental spiritual guidance, always seeking to help those who come to us find what is right for them.

What is spiritual direction?
  • The Holy Spirit directs you by moving you deeply and leading you to a closer union with God.
  • You may wish to share such experiences with a good listener who will do so in a non-judgmental way.
  • By contacting the Jesuit Centre, you will be put in touch with a prayer companion who can teach you to pray with Scripture passages.
  • Prayer Companions are sympathetic listeners rather than problem solvers. They will help you to recognize and respond to God’s presence in you life.
  • More experienced persons may choose to make the full Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, personally directed in weekly interviews while continuing their usual activities.
  • Prayerful persons may also seek spiritual direction while dealing with specific needs: discerning new faith experiences or facing a serious decision.
